The 9M2 prefix traces back to the
ARRL Diamond DXCC List of 1937, where the Malay Peninsula appeared
as two distinct DXCC entities:
| DXCC Entity |
Prefix |
| Federated Malay States |
VS2 |
| Non-Federated Malay States |
VS3 |
Federated Malay States (VS2): Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak.
Non-Federated Malay States (VS3): Selangor, Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis, Terengganu.
In 1948 the Federated and Non-Federated
Malay States merged into the Federation of Malaya,
which gained independence in 1957. Then on
16 September 1963,
Singapore,
Sabah, and
Sarawak united with the Federation of Malaya
to form the new nation of
Malaysia. (Singapore separated in 1965.)
Each territory retains its own amateur radio callsign prefix:
9M2 for Peninsular Malaysia,
9M6 for Sabah, and
9M8 for Sarawak.
The APRSMY Net has been on the air
since February 2026, continuing
that legacy on APRS.
